Every night in Kampala, many children and women swarm main street – Kampala road for panhandling. Almost invariably, all the women and children are from the Karamoja in the eastern region of Uganda. Karamoja is one of the poorest place in Africa. I have not investigated, but common understanding is that most of these women and children are loaded on trucks and forced to go on the streets to beg. In the evening, they must take the returns to their slave masters. I don’t know what can be done to resolve the problem. I took these photos about 3 years ago. When I was in Kampala two weeks ago, there was still a lot of children and women on the streets even though I had heard that the government had forced them off. Creating jobs and improving economic conditions in Karamoja and other poor areas like Northern Uganda would help in alleviating their problems.
